ULSF is a community of members and projects from across the internet, each pursuing a variety of experimental strategies for the development of open source space flight technologies and projects.

Open source as in hardware and software refers to free public access to, and royalty free licensing of technology in its digital engineering materials.  We do this because we adore the challenge, and value a life of continuous learning.  For these reasons we attempt not only the project, but accessibility, comprehension, and reproducibility as well.

We intend Ultra Light as in Space Flight to refer to the smallest possible craft operating on the smallest possible budgets.

Robotic space craft are the backbone of space exploration and development.  Robotic space craft are tools of extension and projection from home into space.  As we develop presence and economy in space, foreseeable and unimagined forms of individual, group and organizational participation will depend on ultra light space flight.

The most obvious is the camera.  Sharing and documenting our respective activities may be more important than the activities themselves, as the sharing and documenting of our activities is a component of both purpose and society.

Open Source

Reproducible, open source engineering provides a complete documentation of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math contributing to and distilled from an effort.  When as much as possible is presented and developed in documentation, and as little as possible is assumed of the reader, internet exploration becomes a true learning experience.

For example, contrast this article on making cathode ray tubes to books on electrodynamics or hydromagnetics.  With both resources, an internet supported exploration of the subject is multiplied directly into skill and capability.  Once one learns that the practical writer intends "milltorr" by "microns", the reader may be able to accept the reading of the article as a significant degree of practical experience with the subject.

Open source technology combines the efforts of all contributors for the benefit of their respective objectives, and sharing multiplies this value.
